Monthly – September 2019

I’m starting to collect various things I listen to, read, or do each month into a trackable, searchable item. Here is too starting!

DO//

The Great Minnesota Get Together – MNStateFair.com

Fried food on sticks. It’s been a few years since Amanda and I (and the kids) have been to the state fair. I was not planning on going since the thought of all 5 of us going was slightly overwhelming.

We all went – The 5 of us walked, ate, and stuffed our faces. We were full and tired on the ride home.

Jeep Gladiator Jeep.com

I had the opportunity to have a Gladiator for the weekend.

The current JL-generation Wrangler is a true modern refinement of the Wrangler. It’s more livable on road and more capable off-road than most vehicles on the road today. With those updates the 2020 Jeep Gladiator has been on my “I need this” list. Currently I’d love something that can tow toys (and race cars), do some light off-roading, haul woodchips, lumber, you name it while keeping the kids neatly tucked in the back.

This thing is GOOFY, and I love it. It’s fun to drive, and seems to check a lot of boxes, even if it’s not great at most of the boxes it checks. Amanda and I were basically sold on it. That is… until it was time to load or unload the kids. It does not comfortably seat 3 in the rear. Getting a car seat into the middle means moving a booster completely out the vehicle.

I still have my fingers crossed Gladiator may someday be in my garage – you know, once we are down to 1 car seat and 1 booster seat? Maybe? I can dream.

I’m glad we “tried” it.

Read//

Radium Girls – This book is full of history, stories, crooked doctors, lawyers, and large money hungry companies. The underlying story of the scientific and historical impact is a valuable one. Everyone should at least read a bit about this group of women who helped shape and expose issues around occupational disease, labor rights, and labor law.

I do think at times the author got a little deep in the lives and friendships of the women. There were several times I just wanted to hear the final outcome vs the entire 8-month long storying highlighting all 30 trips each woman took to the doctor. I understand why it was done, as each woman’s story was just as important and unique as the next, it just made for a longer read.

The Mask of Masculinity – WE ALL WEAR MASKS don’t believe me? Read the book. This is about authenticity, vulnerability, self-awareness, and living your life. Living your life and not hiding behind who you think you’re supposed to be. As I listened to this book I often was able to connect with the various masks, and times that I have used them throughout my life. Connecting others I have known in my life (either favorable or unfavorable) to the masks helped explained their actions, attitude, insecurities, and why there were acting how they did.

Regardless of your gender, I recommend this book.

Make//

Between camera flashes and kid toys, I end up blowing through batteries. I recently bought a bunch of batteries from Amazon to re-stock my dwindling pile. I decided to print this nifty holder to keep near my camera equipment.
